Phobia Treatment | Medivira

Phobias — Medivira

Medivira · Mental Health

Understanding phobias

A phobia is an intense, persistent fear of a specific object, situation, or activity that is far greater than the real danger it poses. It is more than ordinary worry — a phobia can trigger a racing heart, breathlessness, dizziness, or a strong urge to escape the moment the feared thing comes near.

Over time, many people begin to rearrange their lives to avoid what frightens them, which can quietly narrow their world. The reassuring news is that phobias are among the most treatable of all mental health conditions, and with the right support most people recover fully.

Different types of phobias

Phobias take many forms. Three of the most common we treat at Medivira are:

1

Flight anxiety · fear of flying

2

Social phobia · fear of social situations

3

Agoraphobia · fear of places that feel hard to leave

01 · Flight anxiety

Flight anxiety

Flight anxiety is a strong fear of flying or being on an aircraft. People with it may feel panic during turbulence, dread the days before a trip, or avoid flying altogether — sometimes turning down work, holidays, or family visits because of it.

Treatment usually centres on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to reshape frightening thoughts about flight, paired with gradual exposure — often supported by breathing and relaxation techniques or virtual-reality flight simulations. Many people feel confident enough to fly again after just a few structured sessions.

02 · Social phobia

Social anxiety

Social phobia, also called social anxiety disorder, is an intense fear of being watched, judged, or embarrassed in front of others. Everyday situations such as speaking up, eating in public, or meeting new people can feel overwhelming and are often avoided.

It responds well to CBT, which helps challenge the fear of judgement, alongside gentle real-world exposure to build confidence step by step. Skills practice and, where helpful, medication can support progress, allowing people to take part in the situations they once avoided.

03 · Agoraphobia

Fear of difficult to leave places

Agoraphobia is the fear of situations where escape might feel difficult or help hard to reach — such as crowds, open spaces, public transport, queues, or being far from home. In more severe cases, a person may find it hard to leave the house at all.

Care combines CBT with slow, planned exposure that gradually widens a person's comfort zone, often starting close to home and building outward. Relaxation strategies and, when appropriate, medication can ease the journey, helping people move through the world freely again.
