What Is Depression? Recognizing the Signs

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It's the exhaustion that makes getting out of bed feel impossible, the loss of joy in things you once loved, and the mental fog that clouds even the smallest decisions.Depression is a serious medical condition — not a character flaw, not a phase, and not something you can simply "snap out of." It affects how you think, feel, and function every day, and it looks different for everyone. Some people feel deep sadness; others feel numb, irritable, or completely empty.

Common signs of depression include persistent low mood, loss of interest in daily activities, changes in appetite or sleep, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm. If you recognize these signs in yourself or someone you love, reaching out for professional help is the most important step you can take

When Depression Becomes More Than “Feeling down”

Depression is a medical condition that affects mood, energy, motivation, sleep and concentration. Left untreated, it can interfere with work, relationships and overall health.

Accurate Depression diagnosis is important:

Effective treatment starts with correct diagnosis.

Not all depression is the same, and not all depression is treated the same way. Before prescribing any medication, Dr. Jafar conducts a thorough diagnostic evaluation to identify the specific type of depression you are experiencing and — critically — to rule out bipolar spectrum disorders. This step is essential because treating bipolar disorder with a standard antidepressant without a mood stabiliser can actually worsen symptoms. Getting the diagnosis right from the start means getting the right treatment from the start.

Dr. Jafar uses evidence-based, first-line treatments including SSRIs, SNRIs, and other proven antidepressants — selecting the right medication and the right dose for your individual profile. She monitors your response at every follow-up visit and adjusts as needed. Most patients begin to feel improvement within 2 to 6 weeks of starting the right medication.

Depression treatment is not a one-appointment process. Dr. Jafar provides continuous monitoring across your first appointment, your follow-up visits, and your long-term maintenance visits — because lasting relief comes from consistent, personalised care, not a one-size-fits-all prescription.

Medivira provides medication management only — not therapy. Dr. Jafar is a physician prescriber, not a therapist.

If you are also interested in therapy, she can advise on finding appropriate support while managing your medication

"SSRIs are a proven, evidence-based first-line treatment for Major Depressive Disorder, with clinical trials supporting

both their effectiveness and the importance of consistent, physician-managed medication."¹

Clinical depression is a persistent condition lasting two weeks or more that significantly interferes with your ability to work, maintain relationships, or carry out daily activities and unlike ordinary sadness requires professional treatment

  • Is depression curable? Depression is highly treatable and many patients experience full remission of symptoms with the right treatment plan —such as medication management, therapy or both
