What is Adult ADHD?

ADHD in adults is a developmental disorder that is thought to be present in childhood, even if not diagnosed until adulthood. that affects the brain's executive function — the ability to plan, prioritize, focus, and regulate emotions. Many adults don't recognize their struggles as ADHD because the condition can present very differently in adulthood.Unlike children, adults may experience internal restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty sitting still rather than hyperactivity. It is not a lack of willpower or intelligence. It is a medical condition that responds well to proper diagnosis and treatment.

At Medivira, Dr. Jafar brings over 27 years of mental health experience to every evaluation. We understand the nuance of adult ADHD — how it overlaps with anxiety, depression, and substance use — and we take a thorough, whole-person approach to getting you the right diagnosis and the right treatment plan.

Types of Adult ADHD We Diagnose and Treat in Frisco, TX

ADHD presents differently in every person.

At Medivira, we evaluate and treat all presentations of adult ADHD, including:

1) Inattentive Type ADHD (Difficulty Focusing)

Inattentive ADHD is the type most often missed in adults — especially women — because it doesn't involve obvious hyperactivity. Instead, it shows up as chronic daydreaming, difficulty sustaining attention, forgetfulness, and trouble following through on tasks. Many adults with inattentive ADHD were never diagnosed as children because they weren't "disruptive" in class. At Medivira, we are experienced in identifying this often-overlooked presentation and creating targeted medication management plans that help patients in Frisco, TX finally focus and function at their best

2) Hyperactive/Impulsive Type ADHD

Adults with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD may feel a constant internal restlessness — an inability to sit still, relax, or wait. They may interrupt conversations, make impulsive financial decisions, or take risks without fully thinking them through. While hyperactivity often becomes less visible in adulthood, the impulsivity and restlessness remain and can significantly impact career performance and personal relationships. Our medication management approach helps patients in Frisco and Collin County regain control over impulsive behaviors and find a sense of calm.

3) Combined type ADHD the most common presentation in adults — involves significant symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Patients with combined type ADHD often feel pulled in every direction at once: struggling to focus while also feeling restless, disorganized, and overwhelmed. Dr. Jafar develops comprehensive, individualized medication management plans for combined type ADHD patients in Frisco, TX, addressing the full spectrum of symptoms rather than treating them in isolation.

4) ADHD Misdiagnosed as Anxiety or Depression

One of the most common — and most frustrating — experiences for adults with ADHD is being misdiagnosed for years. Because ADHD frequently co-occurs with anxiety and depression, and because its symptoms can mimic those conditions, many adults are treated for anxiety or depression alone while their underlying ADHD goes unaddressed. At Medivira, Dr. Jafar is skilled at distinguishing ADHD from anxiety and depression — and identifying when all three are present — so you finally receive a complete, accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan that actually works.

5) ADHD with Anxiety

ADHD and anxiety are closely linked — in fact, nearly half of adults with ADHD also experience an anxiety disorder. The constant struggle to keep up, meet deadlines, and manage daily responsibilities can create a cycle of stress and worry that feeds anxiety. When both conditions are present, treating ADHD alone is rarely enough. At Medivira, we create integrated medication management plans that address both ADHD and anxiety simultaneously, giving patients in Frisco, TX the most complete and effective path to relief.

6) ADHD with Depression

The repeated experience of underachievement, failed relationships, and missed potential that often accompanies untreated ADHD can lead to significant depression over time. Conversely, depression can worsen ADHD symptoms, creating a difficult cycle that's hard to break. Dr. Jafar's dual expertise in mental health and internal medicine makes Medivira uniquely equipped to treat co-occurring ADHD and depression together, with personalized medication management plans that target both conditions at once.

7) ADHD and Substance Use Disorder

Adults with untreated ADHD are significantly more likely to develop substance use disorders — often using alcohol, cannabis, or stimulants as a way to self-medicate their symptoms.

As a clinic with deep expertise in both mental health and Addiction Medicine — including Suboxone and MAT treatment — Medivira is uniquely positioned to treat both ADHD and substance use disorder together. Addressing both conditions simultaneously gives patients the strongest foundation for lasting recovery and improved daily function

FAQs about ADHD

  • What does Adderall do?

It is a powerful stimulant and helps to:

increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, organize your tasks, improve listening skills & control behavior problems

  • How does it help with ADHD?

For people who have ADHD, it can be invaluable to their success in both daily life functioning, maintaining relationships and professional success.

Adderall can be life changing for many people who genuinely need it and use it properly. However, it’s not the do-it-all, wonder drug that society makes it out to be.

  • How does Adderall work?

It works by increasing serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine which help the brain increase it's duration, intensity and speed in responding to outside stimuli and other events. The “feel good” chemical, Dopamine creates a rewarding effect and a generalized feeling of well being to the point that a lot of people who use it say, “I can’t believe how I got through life before taking this!”

  • Is Adderall addictive?

The positive effects of Adderall may lead users to feel craving for more but euphoric effects fade away after a week or 2. As your body gets used to the effects of Adderall, it develops tolerance which leads users to have to take more and more to achieve the same results and few users may become addicted to it

  • Can you buy Adderall online?

NO – you can’t just go on Amazon and buy Adderall like you buy vitamins

  • Who can prescribe Adderall ? How can I get Adderall ?

You can schedule an appointment with a licensed Practitioner who can diagnose and treat you for ADHD.

This ensures that you’re getting this medication in a legal way and taking it under proper medical supervision and guidance

  • Do I have to go In person to a doctor's office or can I get a treatment for ADHD by doing a tele visit ?

As such, technically it’s required that you see an in-person doctor to be diagnosed and prescribed. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these restrictions (Ryan Haight Act)have been temporarily lifted by the DEA and as of now, extended until Dec 31,2026 and until then, you can get it prescribed by just doing a tele visit--No need to go to a Doctor's office In-Person.

So it's best to get started now, if you’d like to get the prescription from the convenience of your home.

  • How to get prescribed Adderall online ? How does the online process work for Adderall ?

The process itself is very straightforward:

    1) Get Diagnosed with ADHD : As is the case in person, you can only be prescribed Adderall by being diagnosed with ADHD by a licensed physician.

    2) Fill out a quick intake questionnaire of basic information (15 mins).

If the survey indicates ADHD as a likely issue, then you’ll schedule a time to meet with a doctor (virtually) to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment

    3) Prescription is sent electronically to your pharmacy within an hour of your appointment

  • How often do I need to do follow up appointments to get refills?

Since Adderall is a controlled substance, it can be prescribed once every 30 days. You will need to schedule follow up appointments with your provider every 30 days if you want to continue with treatment.

  • Is Adderall a controlled substance?

Adderall is a Schedule II substance in the United States, meaning it is a “drug with a high potential for abuse leading to severe psychological or physical dependence.” This is why recreational use of Adderall is so dangerous, and why it’s essential that your use is supervised by a licensed Physician

  • What's your approach to adult ADHD treatment?

At Medivira, adult ADHD treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis and is followed by a personalized medication management plan designed specifically for you. Dr. Jafar works with each patient to identify the most effective medication approach, monitor progress closely, and make adjustments over time to ensure optimal results.

Assessments to Rule Out Other Conditions: like anxiety, depression, learning disabilities to ensure symptoms are not caused by something else.

  • What are the effects of recreational use of Adderall?

Adderall contains the stimulant, Amphetamine which provides recreational users of the drug with an increased sense of wakefulness, alertness, enhancing their ability to focus and accomplish tasks at a quicker pace.

  • Is recreational use of Adderall dangerous?

  • How hard is it to get prescribed Adderall?

If, based on your questionnaire and conversation, your Provider thinks you have ADHD, that a medication like Adderall might help , then they may prescribe it to you (if the provider deems it’s appropriate) and they’ll support you over time through follow up visits to make sure you’re taking the right dosages, that it’s working, etc. And if your body doesn’t react well to stimulants, don’t be scared – they have non-stimulant medications that you can try out, too.

There’s no “cheat sheet” for either the questionnaire or the appointment itself. no “gaming the system” either.

  • What are the side effects of Adderall ?

Side effects of Adderall include: loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach upset/pain, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, nervousness, and trouble sleeping.

  • How much does it cost to get ADHD treatment online?

$190 for first visit then $125 per month plus ~$30 /month for medication. Generally, medication can be covered by insurance.

  • If I am diagnosed with ADHD, am I guaranteed a script for Adderall?

Quite simply: if the conversation with your doctor signals to him or her that you might have ADHD, they’ll develop a treatment plan for you. In many cases, this includes a low dose of Adderall, or other commonly-prescribed medications like Vyvanse.Even if you’re diagnosed with ADHD, you’re not guaranteed to be prescribed Adderall, specifically. This depends entirely on your providers judgment. In certain cases, like if you have a history of addiction or hypersensitivity to stimulants, your doctor may choose to prescribe you Adderall, Vyvanse or other medications for your ADHD. And again, it’s the doctors’ ultimate decision on the choice of ADHD medication, not yours. Just be open and honest about what you feel. After all, it’s their job to help make you better, so rest assured they’ll do everything they can to help treat you. This is a conversation that you and your provider will have.

  • What is Ryan Haight Act ?

As per the Ryan Haight Act controlled medications like Adderall, cannot be prescribed without an in-person visit

  • How long can we get Adderall for ADHD treatment online ?

Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic Public Health Emergency, Ryan Haight Act restrictions have been temporarily lifted, allowing Americans easier access to getting medical help virtually and as of now, extended until Dec 31,2026 . Until then, you can get it prescribed by just doing a tele visit--No need to go to a Doctor's office In-Person.

After Dec 31,2026 (unless further extension is granted) any newly diagnosed ADHD patients will have to begin the process in person.

  • Is this Online treatment of ADHD legal?

Since Adderall is a controlled substance, technically it’s required that you see an in-person doctor to be diagnosed and prescribed.
