Symptoms lasting over a month—such as flashbacks, severe anxiety, avoidance of triggers, and nightmares—interfere with daily life and functioning.

It often co-occurs with depression or substance use

PTSD affects approximately 20% of people who experience a traumatic event and is significantly more common among veterans, first responders, survivors of abuse, and individuals with a history of substance use disorder.

What's the connection between Addiction, PTSD and psychological or

childhood trauma?

Connection Between PTSD, Trauma, and Addiction

PTSD and substance use disorder are among the most commonly co-occurring conditions in mental health. Research shows that up to 46% of individuals with PTSD also meet criteria for a substance use disorder — often using alcohol, opioids, or stimulants to manage intrusive symptoms, hypervigilance, and sleep disturbances.

This connection is not a personal failing — it is a well-documented neurological pattern. Trauma alters the brain's stress response system (the HPA axis), making individuals significantly more vulnerable to developing dependence on substances that temporarily quiet those symptoms. Without treating the trauma, addiction treatment is far less effective. Without treating the addiction, trauma recovery is far harder.

This is exactly why Medivira treats both. Dr. Jafar is one of the only board-certified Addiction Medicine physicians in Frisco, TX who also provides trauma-informed mental health care — including PTSD medication management — as part of an integrated treatment program. You do not need to see multiple providers or multiple clinics

Who Is Most Affected by Co-Occurring PTSD and Addiction?

Veterans and active military — PTSD affects up to 30% of Vietnam veterans and 20% of Iraq/Afghanistan veterans

Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or childhood abuse

First responders — police, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics

Patients with opioid use disorder — trauma histories are extremely common in this population

Individuals who experienced accidents, natural disasters, or sudden loss

If you are in treatment for opioid use disorder and also experiencing PTSD symptoms — flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness — Medivira can treat both conditions simultaneously at our Frisco, TX clinic. Call (845) 566-1656.

FAQs about PTSD

  • What is PTSD and what causes it?

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event — such as combat, sexual assault, domestic violence, accidents, or childhood abuse. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, but for those who do, symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, emotional numbing, and avoidance can persist for months or years without treatment.

  • How is PTSD treated at Medivira in Frisco, TX?

At Medivira, Dr. Jafar provides a comprehensive evaluation followed by a personalized medication management plan. This may include FDA-approved SSRIs (Sertraline/Zoloft or Paroxetine/Paxil), alpha-blockers like Prazosin for nightmares, and off-label medications for sleep, mood, and hyperarousal. Dr. Jafar also treats co-occurring conditions including depression, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, and substance use disorder. Same-day appointments available in Frisco, TX.

  • Does Medivira accept insurance for PTSD treatment?

Yes. Medivira accepts Texas Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Obamacare/ACA marketplace plans, and most commercial insurance. Self-pay visits are $125 — one of the lowest rates for physician-led PTSD care in Frisco, TX. No memberships, no hidden fees.

  • Can PTSD be treated via telehealth in Texas?

Yes. Medivira offers PTSD medication management via telehealth 7 days a week from 9am to 9pm across all of Texas. Video or audio-only appointments are available. Telehealth allows patients to receive confidential care from home without the stigma of being seen at a mental health facility.

  • What is the connection between PTSD and addiction?

Up to 46% of people with PTSD also have a co-occurring substance use disorder. Trauma alters the brain's stress response, making individuals more vulnerable to using alcohol or drugs to manage symptoms like hypervigilance, flashbacks, and insomnia. At Medivira, Dr. Jafar treats both PTSD and addiction simultaneously — the only way to achieve lasting recovery from either condition.

  • What are the symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD symptoms fall into four categories: (1) Re-experiencing — flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories; (2) Avoidance — steering clear of people, places, or situations that trigger memories; (3) Negative changes in thinking and mood — guilt, shame, emotional numbness, detachment; (4) Hyperarousal — being easily startled, difficulty sleeping, irritability, angry outbursts. Symptoms must last more than one month and significantly impair daily functioning to meet PTSD criteria.

  • Is PTSD treatment available for veterans in Frisco, TX?

Yes. Medivira welcomes veterans and active military patients in Frisco and the greater DFW area. Dr. Jafar has extensive experience treating combat-related PTSD and its co-occurring conditions including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and substance use disorder. Telehealth appointments are available 7 days a week for veterans across Texas.

  • How long does PTSD treatment take?

PTSD treatment duration varies based on the severity of trauma, co-occurring conditions, and individual response to treatment. Some patients experience significant improvement within 3–6 months of medication management. Others require longer-term maintenance. At Medivira, Dr. Jafar monitors your progress at every visit and adjusts your treatment plan as needed — with no pressure to follow a rigid timeline.

  • Can PTSD cause insomnia and nightmares?

Yes — sleep disturbance is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of PTSD. Nightmares related to the traumatic event, difficulty falling asleep due to hyperarousal, and early morning awakening are all characteristic of PTSD. Dr. Jafar addresses sleep symptoms directly — including prescribing Prazosin for nightmare suppression and treating insomnia as part of the overall PTSD management plan.

  • Does Medivira provide therapy or only medication management for PTSD?

Medivira provides medication management only — not therapy. Dr. Jafar specializes in evaluating PTSD symptoms and prescribing the most effective FDA-approved and off-label medications to reduce flashbacks, nightmares, hyperarousal, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. We do not offer talk therapy, CBT, CPT, EMDR, or other psychotherapy modalities. Medivira is a physician-led medication management clinic serving patients in Frisco, TX and across Texas via telehealth.
