OUD is a chronic medical condition — not a moral failure. The brain's chemistry changes with prolonged opioid use, and medication helps restore normal function so patients can focus on rebuilding their lives.
A 2021 NIH study (PMC8389722) showed buprenorphine reduces overdose death risk by 50–70%.

Suboxone and Sublocade MAT That Accepts Medicaid and Most Insurance Plans
Cost should never stop you from getting care. At Medivira, we accept most major insurance plans — including Texas Medicaid — making MAT in Frisco, TX accessible to everyone. We'll help you verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises. New patients also receive a free consultation to explore their options with zero pressure
MAT is an evidence-based approach that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat Opioid Use Disorder. It addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction for a whole-person recovery experience.
OUD is a chronic medical condition characterized by a problematic pattern of opioid use that causes significant impairment or distress. It changes brain chemistry over time and requires comprehensive medical treatment — not willpower alone.
Suboxone is a sublingual (under-the-tongue) film or tablet that combines buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, with naloxone, an opioid blocker. Buprenorphine reduces cravings and withdrawal, while naloxone discourages misuse. It is taken daily at home.
Sublocade is an extended-release buprenorphine injection given once a month by your healthcare provider. It delivers a consistent dose of medication throughout the month, removing the need for daily dosing and providing steady, reliable coverage.
No. MAT medications are FDA-approved treatments that stabilize brain chemistry without producing the dangerous highs and lows of opioid misuse. Studies show that patients on MAT are more likely to remain employed, reduce criminal activity, and maintain their health compared to those not receiving treatment.
Treatment duration is different for everyone. Some patients need several months of treatment; others benefit from long-term maintenance. The decision to taper is made collaboratively between patient and provider, based on stability, progress, and individual goals
Most major insurance plans — including Medicaid and Medicare — cover MAT medications and associated visits. Contact our office and we can help verify your coverage and discuss available options
No referral is required. Simply reach out to our office to schedule your initial evaluation and get started on your path to recovery.
Yes. You do not need to be fully detoxed before starting treatment. However, you do need to be in mild to moderate withdrawal before taking your first dose of Suboxone — typically 12 to 24 hours after your last opioid use. Starting too early can trigger precipitated withdrawal, which feels much worse than regular withdrawal. At your first appointment, Dr. Jafar will assess your withdrawal level using a clinical scale and guide you through the safest timing for your first dose. Many patients begin the same day as their intake visit.
Most patients feel significant relief from cravings and withdrawal symptoms within 30 to 60 minutes of taking their first dose. Full stabilization — where cravings are consistently controlled and you feel physically normal — typically takes 2 to 7 days as the dose is adjusted to the right level for your body. Some patients feel dramatically better after the very first dose. Dr. Jafar will follow up closely during the first few weeks to fine-tune your dosage until you reach a stable, comfortable baseline.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose. Missing an occasional dose is generally not dangerous, but missing several doses in a row can allow cravings and withdrawal symptoms to return. If you find yourself frequently missing doses, contact Medivira — we can discuss whether Sublocade, our once-monthly injection, might be a better fit for your lifestyle.
